Hinterland is a great concept in which gamers can enjoy two completely different game play systems. The first goal of the game is to build a city, in the aim of building a powerful medieval town in the Hinterland. Very similar to Diablo, the gamer kills evil monsters and collects things (weapons, armour, potions) along the way, as well as recruiting town citizens to aid in the mission. Gamers begin as a simple character owning a simple house in the middle of a hostile land. The character has almost no weapons or protection at this stage, and will collect these along the way. During the game, new arrivals will appear in the town and they generally hang around for a little while deciding whether to stay or not. If the gamer decides that they would be a valuable addition to the town (i.e. doctor, craftsmen) he can decide to use some of his stored gold to build them a home. Once the newcomers are established in the town they can then begin to provide services to the gamer. A farmer can grow food and a craftsman can build armour and weapons; both very useful to the gamer.
The other side to the game is to incorporate the new town into the kingdom. Outside of the town lies a land full of evil monsters which must be killed. Once the area is safe and rid of all evil presences, it will become part of the kingdom. After completing a few missions, the gamer will need to recruit help which he can get from the people in his town. The gamer needs to decide which members of the public would be valuable on the mission, and which members need to stay at home. Decisions will affect the outcome of any mission, as if the gamer were to recruit the craftsmen, he may come home to find that there is no armour to buy. Hinterland is a great game for its price tag, and definitely worth a go! The two sides of the game make it unique and challenging to play and gamers can spend hours building the town to how they want it.
